Do you export to Canada?
Canada PMRA Update

On November 30, 2018, Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) issued Regulatory Proposal PRO2018-03, Pre-Consultation – Proposed Amendments to the Pest Control Products Regulations (Product Exemptions). Among the proposed amendments is a treated article exemption similar to what exists in the US. The term “treated article” is defined as a product that has been treated with a pesticide, including antimicrobial preservatives. Articles treated with antimicrobial preservatives are proposed to be exempt from registration as long as:The preservative used to treat the article is registered under Canada’s Pest Control Products Act (PCPA). The use is only for protecting the article. The article is treated with a use pattern approved in Canada (i.e. wood preservation)And no pesticidal claims are being made for the article itself. By “preservative” PMRA is referring to the active ingredient in the preservative used to treat the wood.

There are some active ingredients that are registered for wood use in the US, but not in Canada, such as Bifenthrin, Imidacloprid and Chlorothalonil. Under this new proposal, this would prevent wood treated with these actives from being exported to Canada. PMRA will accept written comments on this rule until February 28, 2019. Lonza has been in contact with PMRA to seek clarification on certain aspects of the proposal and is providing comments in conjunction with the American Chemistry Council Center for Biocide Chemistries. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide you with updates.
